Why is Blogging So Complicated?
Every now and then, I get an "urge" to put some time and effort into making my website/blog a better place; a better theme, better ideas to discuss, better sections about myself and my life. It's hard to explain this feeling and how quickly it dies, but I do like to write from time to time, for anyone who gives a rip what I have to say.
But every time that this happens, I also look at the visuals of my site, get a little disappointed that the coat of paint isn't "fresh", and start looking at what I can do to remedy that problem. I've switched from Hugo to Ghost, Ghost to Zola, and obviously, I'm now back to Ghost because Zola is just honestly a little too complicated for my taste and maintenance desires.
I just want to write! But the drawbacks are obvious: My biggest complaint about Ghost is that it is not strictly Markdown files that provide the content of the posts and therefore, I can't do a simple backup/export of what I write. Sure, Ghost does allow me to export my posts but it's in JSON.
Maybe I just need to force myself to leave the site as is, quit worrying about the aesthetics, and just write some stuff.
I used to toy around with creating my own theme for Hugo or Zola, but I'm not dedicated enough to write out all of the SASS/SCSS myself. I'm not very good at color schemes, matching, creating layouts that are mobile friendly, etc. So why not use a blogging platform like Ghost that does it all for me? I could discuss Hugo/Zola and their theming solutions, but it's never as simple as clicking on a theme and it applying correctly the first time.
This reminds me of a book/idea called "Hell Yeah or No". It's basically an idea that unless you are all in on an idea ("Hell Yeah"), say no and forget about it, move on to other things that are worth your time. I've pondered time and time again about how I can make this site better, but most of the time, the "Hell Yeah" feeling fades super fast.
Time to leave this thing alone and just write.
